CCHO Hosts Successful Webinar on Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR)

On December 3rd, 2024, the Center for Clinical, Health Economics and Outcomes Research (CCHO), in collaboration with the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) King Saud University (KSU), successfully hosted the fourth session of its ongoing webinar series dedicated to Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR). This initiative, which aims to disseminate cutting-edge knowledge and foster collaboration among healthcare professionals, researchers, and decision-makers, has gained significant momentum across the MENA region. The latest session brought together over 40 healthcare professionals, who actively participated in engaging discussions with key stakeholders. These discussions focused on critical advancements and the practical applications of HEOR in shaping healthcare.

As a seasoned expert in the field, the session commenced with Dr. Russel Becker, HEOR Lead at CCHO. Dr. Becker began by shedding light on the evolving and crucial role of HEOR within Health Technology Assessment (HTA). He provided an in-depth exploration of how HEOR has transitioned from being a supplementary component of healthcare research to becoming a cornerstone of evidence-based decision-making processes. His introduction emphasized that, as healthcare systems worldwide face growing demands and constrained budgets, the role of HEOR become more critical than ever in light of advancements in healthcare technologies and shifting priorities. Dr. Becker highlighted that HEOR sets robust framework for evaluating cost-effectiveness and long-term value. This opening offered a strong foundation for the subsequent speakers to build upon.

Dr. Youmna Bassil, Senior HEOR Analyst at CCHO, followed with an overview of economic evaluation concepts. She detailed various types of costs, outcomes, and health economic analyses, including Budget Impact Analysis (BIA), Cost of Illness (COI), Cost-Effectiveness Analysis (CEA), Cost-Minimization Analysis (CMA), Cost-Utility Analysis (CUA), and Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA).
